Do you want to make backups, but you forget to do it regularly or fear missing something important? No problem, because backups can be automated!
For this, you can use special applications or security solution features. We will talk about automatic backup using Kaspersky Total Security as an example, although the same function is also implemented in Kaspersky Security Cloud.
To find the feature, simply open the main program window. The step-by-step wizard will help you configure automatic backup tasks.
The first stage is the choice of files for backup. You can either select the listed options (they are most often required), or manually specify folders containing important files. As a rule, it makes sense to back up everything of value to you.
That said, it’s better not to specify all important files in one go. Have a think about which ones you update more often and which ones less so, and create a separate task for each group. That way, the solution does not have to scan daily to see if, say, more photos have been added on the computer.
The second stage is the choice of backup storage location. It can be a cloud service, an external drive, or a network storage. You can also choose the main hard drive, but it’s not recommended. We discussed the pros and cons of each option in Lesson 10.
Backup can be configured the way you need it in the advanced settings. Let’s start with the schedule. Select the backup time and frequency. A backup can slow down the computer, so don’t schedule it to coincide with running resource-hungry activities, such as assembling videos or playing games.
Don’t forget to configure the solution to launch the backup later if you forget to connect the external drive at the appointed time.
It’s up to you whether or not to set a password. Password-protected backups are even more secure, but you cannot restore the files if you forget the combination. It’s worth configuring it so that Kaspersky Restore Utility is placed on the disk together with the backup copy of files, so that you can recover them even if for some reason Kaspersky Total Security is not to hand.
Kaspersky Total Security saves space and does not copy files that have not been modified since the last backup. For the rest, several versions can be stored. If ever you delete a report due to absentmindedness or lack of sleep, yesterday’s version will be most welcome. There’s no need to overdo it – two or three versions are enough.
That’s it. Now you can always recover your files, which means that ransomware and unfortunate accidents are no longer a menace.
